Inside the Victorian Home
Judith Flanders
This comprehensive behemoth is fantastic for its social history, careful research, and gripping narrative --- yes, I did say "gripping." It was extremely difficult to put down, and far more engaging, in my opinion, than Vickery's Behind Closed Doors about the Georgian home. Everything from chamber pots to calling cards to courtship is covered, and illustrations are dispersed throughout. I don't even like the Victorians, but I finished this book with a better understanding of their collective psyche and the reasons behind some of their more bizarre practices.

"No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting. She will not want new fashions nor regret the loss of expensive diversions or variety of company if she can be amused with an author in her closet."
Lady Montagu, 1752
