This comprehensive behemoth is fantastic for its social history, careful research, and gripping narrative --- yes, I did say "gripping." Everything from chamber pots to calling cards to courtship is covered, and illustrations are dispersed throughout. I don't even like the Victorians, but I finished this book with a better understanding of their collective psyche and the reasons behind some of their more bizarre practices.
